Great read as always, Charlie.

CORRECTION: Actually, when asked about any dirty little secrets that women keep to themselves, Ephron offered up something, and it eventually evolved into Rob including “faking orgasms” in the script for the diner scene. But, Billy Crystal actually gave Reiner the golden line uttered by his mom, Estelle Reiner.

With respect to Rob Reiner, I will offer a few other notable facts. Rob grew up in the same neighborhood as Penny Marshall (Grand Concourse in The Bronx). Penny auditioned for the role of Gloria in “All in the Family” but lost the role to Sally Struthers because Norman Lear and others thought that Sally would have a more convincing father/daughter bond with Carroll O’Connor (Meathead’s father in law). And, with respect to “When Harry Met Sally”, Rob Reiner collaborated with Nora Ephron on the script. Rob was in charge of Harry and Nora was in charge of Sally. So, when Rob thought of changing the ending to a happier one (reuniting Harry and Sally on NYE), he had to consult with Ephron, who also gave him the idea for the funniest line in the movie (perhaps, the funniest line in any of his movies), “I’ll have what she’s having”, delivered by Estelle Reiner, his mom.
